Code of Practice for the Composition and Labelling of Yogurt

In 1983, the Dairy Industry and LACOTS recognised the need to ensure that consumers, manufacturers and retailers had a common understanding of the nature of yogurt and its labelling. This was because yogurt, unlike other well established dairy products such as milk, cream, butter, cheese, milk powders, etc., was not covered by specific legislation related to product composition and labelling.

As a result, the Dairy Industry, in conjunction with LACOTS, developed a Code of Practice for the composition and labelling of yogurt. The Code was revised regularly through the years to reflect the many changes in the yogurt manufacturing process and major developments in food legislation generally. This revised Code of Practice has been developed to reflect current manufacturing and regulatory practice. Unless otherwise stated, its provisions are above those required by the food legislative system and do not in any way alter the law.

Guidance on the Prevention of Slips & Trips in the Dairy Industry

Slips and Trips injuries account for 35% of 'major' injuries in the food and drink industries.

In the dairy industry, of those accidents reported to Dairy UK, 74% were slips and 26% trips. Of the slip accidents 66% happened on site and 34% off site, whilst 48% of trips occurred on site and 52% off site.

The top causes of the accidents in the food and drink industry are wet floors; contaminated floors from spillages of ingredients, milk, chemicals or oil from machinery; damaged or uneven floor surfaces; incorrect footwear; equipment, objects, materials causing obstructions.

Guidance on Safe Systems for Working at Height on Milk Tankers

cover heights tankersThe dairy industry recognises the need to reduce accidents from working at height on milk tankers and find solutions that minimise the reasons for accessing the top of milk tankers.

The structure of this guidance follows the current legal requirements under the Work at Height Regulations by following the hierarchy for managing risks from working at height, i.e. taking steps to avoid, prevent or minimise risks if colleagues are required to work at height. However, technical developments could provide further opportunities to minimise working at height in the future.

This guidance has been produced by Dairy UK through a working group drawn from Dairy UK's Occupational Health and Safety Committee and the Management Committee of the Dairy Transport Assurance Scheme.

Guidelines for the Safe Use and Movement of Milk Trolleys

This document has been produced by Dairy UK, in conjunction with its Occupational Health & Safety Committee, with the specific aims to promote best practice in the use of the industry's milk trolley fleet, and to reduce the risk of manual handling injuries.

The guidance covers ways to avoid the need to manually handle trolleys by elimination, automation or mechanisation; identifying and minimising risks involved with all aspects of trolley movement; outlining safe working practices for the handling of trolleys; providing the framework to assist organisations in training their staff and others.

Guidance on the Application of Date Marks and Storage Instructions for the Dairy Industry

Dairy Industry Code of Best Practice on Contractual Relationships

cover vcopThe Voluntary Code of Best Practice on Contractual Relationships was drawn up between Dairy UK, the NFU and the NFUS and launched in 2012.

It sets out good practice for contracts between producers and purchasers. The Code was introduced to give dairy farmers confidence in their contractual arrangements and enable dairy farmers and processors to develop deeper relationships of trust and mutual understanding.

The Code was reviewed in 2014 under the chairmanship of Alex Fergusson MSP.
